What is a sales funnel?

Picture a Mediterranean port welcoming thousands of potential clients every season: travel agencies scouting for new destinations, cruise lines weighing up where to call, and travellers dreaming about their next voyage.

Every one of them could become a customer… yet the vast majority don’t know us yet, aren’t actively looking for us, or simply haven’t decided anything.

So how do we move someone from «never heard of us» to «a client who books with confidence»?

That is, ultimately, the big question behind marketing and sales. And the answer is rarely direct. Nobody discovers a brand on a Monday and signs a contract the same day.

Between that first contact and the final decision there is a journey — a path that each person or company travels at their own pace.

In the previous articles we explored the concept of a lead: that contact who has shown genuine interest in what we offer. Capturing leads, however, is only the beginning.

The real challenge — and where the value lies — is guiding each of those contacts along their journey until they become a client.

To organise and understand that journey, marketing relies on a tool that is as visual as it is practical: the sales funnel.

It’s called a funnel because it works exactly like one: many contacts enter at the top and fewer customers come out at the bottom. What matters is knowing which stage each contact is in, what they need at that moment, and where we are losing opportunities we could otherwise recover.

Putting this into practice doesn’t have to be complicated:

A cruise line or port can attract attention with inspiring content like blog posts and videos, turn that interest into a relationship through downloadable guides and email sequences, and close the deal with a tempting offer and a frictionless booking process.

Keep reading to have a clear picture of how to structure your marketing actions not just to attract more people, but to convert them into real clients.
